I've lived at El Lago for a month now. It's been several years since I've lived in an apartment, but I really like it here so far. There are a ton of families with kids, so it feels safe, and the apartments (at least in my building) seem to have good insulation because I don't generally hear my neighbors unless they're literally in the breezeway right outside my door. You can tell the units were built a while ago, during a time when an onsite racquetball court was a sought-after luxury amenity, but the appliances have been updated and my unit was a 9.5/10 on cleanliness and maintenance when I moved in. I also like the layout of the buildings. I have a third floor unit, and the only reason to be walking past my door is if you live in one of the three other units accessible via the staircase or are making a delivery. Nobody is loitering and there's not a lot of traffic. Also, both of my exterior doors, the front door and the balcony/patio door, have secondary deadbolts, so I feel very safe. (In addition to the fact that this is McKinney)
I will say that considering there are at least a dozen well-stocked dog poop stations, a lot of people don't pick up their dog's poop. But the apartment management seems very reasonable about their pet restrictions. I've seen people with great danes, pitbulls, tiny yappers, and everything in between, and they've all been responsibly leashed. The dog park is a little underwhelming, but my big dumb Australian shepherd likes to sniff around it every now and then.
Office management and maintenance are reasonably responsive and helpful, and have so far appeared to be very reasonable about community rules. I always see people zooming around in their golf carts to get stuff done, which I can't say for other apartments I've lived at. On the day I moved in, one of them noticed I was having problems with my garage and proactively helped me get a new remote and re-keyed the door while I watched.
I'm not a super outgoing person, but my neighbors are friendly and polite. Kids know how to act around my dog and will ask nicely and greet him before going in for pets. I frequently have short, friendly interactions while walking around, and I have to say that it's nice being surrounded by what seems to be a bunch of good people. It's a good balance of everyone looking out for each other but also respecting other peoples' spaces. It's the kind of place where a kid can accidentally leave their shoes next to the beach volleyball court and be able to find them the next day.
The location is great, right off of 75 and 121, so it's easy to get around DFW. There's plenty of things to do and shopping nearby, including a Trader Joe's within walking distance. I do wish there was a convenience store or gas station in walking distance, but there's a Half-Price Books, a big box gym, and a Fuzzy's, among other stuff, so it all sorts out, and honestly I should probably drink less Diet Coke so...
If you're looking for a reasonably priced apartment in a good location, I think El Lago is worth checking out. I did my whole evaluation and application online from out of state, so I didn't even look at a unit in-person before I moved in, and I have no regrets so far.

Been here for about 3 years and honestly been great. Timely maintenance. Great amenities. Feels safe. Cop lives somewhere in the community. any negative reviews you see is probably because of goofy neighbors that's anywhere though.

I lived here for 3 years and when I moved out I got charged for things that I returned before I completely moved out like key remotes which I have a copy of. I had to deal with rude neighbors coming up to my door which made me increase my security. The parking here sucks. No one picks up there dog shit. The only damages I had was from the stove top which I was aware but the other ones doesn’t make sense. Now I’m left with a $1708.69 bill from things that seem a bite off.

I’ve lived at El Lago for almost six months now. The apartment complex is clean and quiet. My maintenance requests have always been addressed quickly. I’ve never had an issue with roaches or other bugs in a first floor apartment. The leasing office has always been nice and helpful. Would highly recommend.

We've lived here since 2018, and in the ~7 years we've been here we haven't had any major issues. While we did have water leaks they were ALWAYS repaired good as new. There's a reason we have renewed as much as we have, and we probably will again. One of the quietest places we've ever lived, and Murphi is by far the best property manager we have experienced in 2 decades of rentals. If I had it to do all over again, I wouldn’t hesitate!
